Excellence in Research
More than 200 Purdue faculty and staff gathered in November for the Excellence in Research
Awards dinner, celebrating the accomplishments and contributions of Purdue’s research community.
Among the honorees were faculty members who had received college or school awards for
outstanding research in 2015, along with Seed for Success honorees — principal investigators and
co-investigators garnering awards of $1 million or more. Of the 128 investigators working on the
53 different Seed for Success awards, 35 received their bronze acorn award in recognition of their
contribution in acquiring for the first time an award of $1 million or more.
As part of the ceremonies, Ronnie Wilbur, a professor with joint appointments in Linguistics
and the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences, received the 2015 Research and
Scholarship Distinction Award, Purdue’s most prestigious research honor in the humanities and
social sciences. Wojciech Szpankowski, the Saul Rosen Professor of Computer Science, received
the inaugural Arden L. Bement Jr. Award, Purdue’s top research honor in pure and applied
science and engineering. Arun K. Ghosh, the Ian P. Rothwell Distinguished Professor of Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology, received the 2015 Herbert Newby
McCoy Award, Purdue’s highest research honor in the natural sciences.
Their names now appear in the Purdue Memorial Union on a plaque commemorating honorees for these distinctive Purdue awards.
